About Lanai
Lanai, Hawaii is a small and extraordinarily intimate island situated in the Auau Channel between Maui and Molokai in the heart of the Hawaiian archipelago, approximately 15 kilometres west of Maui and accessible only by ferry from Lahaina or by small aircraft, and is the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island in Hawaii — a place of just over 3,000 permanent residents, a single small town, two of the most acclaimed luxury resorts in the world, and a landscape of such varied and surprising beauty that it encompasses red volcanic craters, windswept pine forests, ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites, pristine white sand beaches, and some of the clearest and most abundant marine waters in the entire Pacific in a concentration of natural wonder that is simply extraordinary for an island of its modest size.
Lanai's modern identity has been shaped to an unusual and fascinating degree by the history of corporate ownership — the island was purchased in 1922 by James Dole and operated as the world's largest pineapple plantation for over half a century, producing at its peak eight million pineapples a day and employing virtually the entire island population in a monoculture agricultural enterprise of remarkable scale whose legacy is still visible in the red earth fields and the plantation-era architecture of Lanai City. The island was subsequently purchased by Larry Ellison, the Oracle co-founder, in 2012, who owns approximately 98 percent of the island and has invested in transforming it into a model of sustainable luxury tourism — a vision expressed most magnificently in the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay and the Four Seasons Lodge at Koele, two of the most acclaimed and beautifully situated luxury resorts in the Hawaiian Islands.
Lanai's natural landscapes are among the most varied and surprising in Hawaii — the Garden of the Gods, a surreal landscape of wind-sculpted red and orange volcanic boulders scattered across an otherworldly plateau in the island's north, offers one of the most dramatically beautiful and least visited natural spectacles in the Hawaiian Islands, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the volcanic rock glows with an almost supernatural intensity. Hulopoe Bay, fronting the Four Seasons at Manele Bay, is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world — a crescent of white sand sheltered by lava headlands above a marine preserve of exceptional clarity and marine life abundance, where spinner dolphins play in the surf and snorkelers encounter an underwater world of extraordinary richness.
Top attractions include the stunning Hulopoe Beach and marine preserve, the otherworldly Garden of the Gods, the Munro Trail hiking and four-wheel-drive route through the island's central pine forest ridge offering panoramic views of five Hawaiian islands on clear days, the Lanai Culture and Heritage Center in Lanai City preserving the island's fascinating plantation and Hawaiian history, and the remarkably well-preserved Luahiwa Petroglyph Field, one of the largest and most significant collections of ancient Hawaiian rock carvings in the islands.
With its extraordinary luxury resort experiences, stunning Hulopoe Bay, surreal Garden of the Gods, rich plantation heritage, profound Hawaiian archaeological legacy, and an intimate island scale and quietude that offer a genuinely different and deeply restorative Hawaiian experience, Lanai is a Hawaiian island of rare beauty, fascinating history, and incomparable exclusivity.
Its airport code is LNY (Lanai Airport).
